Also a possible reference to the notion that society is defined by materialistic fetish (see Marx.): Even at the end of the world, people won’t realize that there is more to life than mere materialistic tangible goods, and they will thus still be trying to save the goods they worked hard to obtain. Aesop, and those like him, will not worry themselves with their tangible goods when the world is ending, but rather respect and appreciate the true blessings of this life.
