Emmit Till and Malice Green, Rekia Boyd and Trayvon Martin
These are all names of tragic, unjust killings of African Americans because of racial prejudice:
- Emmett Till was brutally murdered on April 28, 1955, in Mississippi, for allegedly flirting with a white woman. He was only 14 years old and his death galvanized the incipient civil rights movement.
- Malice Green was killed by two police officers in Detroit on November 5, 1992 for allegedly refusing to relinquish a vial of crack. Malice died from blunt force trauma to the head after one of the white officers beat him 14 times with their flashlight
- Rekia Boyd was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer on Chicago’s Westside in March 2012. The officer opened fire on Rekia and her friends, despite them being unarmed and shot Rekia in the head.
- Trayvon Martin was the infamous hoodie-wearing 17 year old who was gunned down by George Zimmerman (awaiting trial) in February 2012 in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch coordinator who claims Martin was causing trouble in the neighborhood and fatally shot him after an altercation, even though he too was unarmed.
