And so began it here. And for five hundred years
Torture, terror, fear 'til they nearly disappear
500 years ago is when the pilgrims invaded the Americas and nearly destroyed the Native American heritage, terrorizing their land while raping and/or killing hundreds of thousands of them during the process. These settlers (along with other Europeans/Anglo-Saxans/Whites) drove out most Native Americans to the north and west until they were left with nothing.
This leads us to the present day, where we do see quite a few tribes holding onto their heritage and spreading their legacy by preserving their languages; spirituality; and other facets of their cultures. However, because Native Americans (both as individual tribes and all tribes combined) are a minority group (both in power and in numbers), their voices are ignored… which is what Lupe refers to when he says “nearly disappear”.
