Carmel, Michel Foucault, Michelle ma belle
Michel Foucault is one of the most important intellectuals of the past one hundred years. He is most famed for his various “archaeologies” of assorted social phenomena, in which he traces the roots of our beliefs, and puts their foundations up to the light for critical scrutiny. He is also well-known for his concept of biopower, first explicated in his History of Sexuality, Vol. 1. Biopower is essentially power over life, which turns into biopolitics — the business that the government engages in when they decide who gets to live, and how.
Kool A.D. would undoubtedly have read some Foucault, having attended a school like Wesleyan, and being the type of person who references critical authors like Gayatri Spivak in interviews.
As far as connections to fashion go — Foucault would undoubtedly hate vapid materialistic parties like the one portrayed in this song. But, in true DR fashion, the connection could also be much lighter: Foucault was a Frenchie, and when people think of Paris, they think fashion.
