You know what that is? I told you what that is, that's that alien, bruv, believe it!
Musta come from outer space trying to take over the earth, innit?
Well it landed in the wrong place, though, you get me? The wrong place!
This is the block, fam! Nobody fucks with the block, do you get me?
Block! Block! Block! Block!
Attack the Block is a British half-comedy movie about aliens. So why did Kweli choose to sample it in this mixtape? Well, aliens attacking the block could represent people from outside attacking Hip Hop i.e. rap music being commercialised and Hip Hop’s bad reputation in the news. The dead prez sample adds to the idea of people from outside Hip Hop destroying it (‘It’s bigger than Hip Hop’).
Also, the movie has a surprisingly strong message for the ending. Moses, the main character, was involved in small crimes, but he saved London from aliens once they came and he was instantly arrested without even being thanked or anything, showing how the legal system doesn’t allow for redemption and doesn’t look at the good things people have done which may outweigh the bad ones.
