The greatest trick that the devil ever pulled
Was convincing women that they looked
Better in their makeup
This line is a play on the now famous quote from “The Usual Suspects” in which Verbal Kint (Keyser Soze) says:
“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist.”
This quote was actually paraphrased from a story by Charles Baudelaire
Macklemore spins it to tell girls they don’t need to wear make up to look good.
Additionally, this line may be a callback to the work of the late Eyedea (of Eyedea and Abilities). In his song, “Burn Fetish”, Eyedea raps the line
“the greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing me that I was him”.
