Earl’s pronunciation has also caused many to suspect he is saying “moths in a mosh pit” instead. The line would still make sense if this were the case, seeing as moths are fragile insects with large, delicate wings.
Also, Earl likely didn’t realize this while writing the line, but moss compressed on a body in a pit is the method of preservation which resulted in the bog bodies found throughout Northwest Europe.
