Trayvon Martin was a high profile case in the beginning part of 2012 that incited cries of racism and corruption in Sanford, Florida, in which a 17 year old male, named Trayvon Martin, was reportedly “acting suspicious” and therefore approached by a concerned George Zimmerman. He got in a unwarranted scuffle with Trayvon, which ultimately led to the him shooting and killing Martin at close range with one shot in the chest. .
The point is to say that Pusha could have ended up a victim, but he made the right moves to become a drug kingpin like the fictional character Avon Barksdale from the TV show The Wire.
To expand on the Trayvon/Avon contrast: As a young black American male, he would have been seen as a thug no matter what he did, so why be passive and become a victim? Might as well become a thug, and reap the benefits.
Pusha uses the dual meaning of “Avon”, this time referring to the makeup company for women. Geishas are traditional female Japanese entertainers acting as hostesses performing such acts as music, dance, and games; they wear white makeup. Junkies have white on their faces too, but from another powdery substance…
