Got respected in Brooklyn Tech
Spike's joint across the street
Spike Lee’s movies are called “A Spike Lee Joint”. Spike Lee shot a scene from his movie School Daze at Brooklyn Technical High School.
Also, Spike Lee owned a store called Spike’s Joint in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Forte Greene. Located at DeKalb Avenue and South Elliot Place, the store opened in 1990 and was noted for selling memorabilia from Lee’s movies, even helping popularize the early 90’s fad of Malcolm X hats.
Talib Kweli, a Fort Greene Brooklyn resident, attended high school at Brooklyn Tech around this time. Brooklyn Tech is about a 2 minute walk from where Spike’s Joint was located. Hence, the meaning of the line; Kweli garnered the respect he was receiving at school because he was buying fresh gear right around the corner at Spike’s Joint.
