I hope that God decides to talk through him
That the people decide to walk with him
Think of these opening lines as an invocation of a higher force a la Homer’s Iliad or Odyssey. Both start out by calling on the muse to sing through them. Here Mac calls on God to speak the truth through him and calls on the people to listen and walk with both of them, another classical tradition. This makes sense with all the Greek and Roman references in this album.
God has already inspired his rap before, as he notes later when he says that “God wrote ‘Otherside’, that pen was in my hand.” He believes that genius is earned, but only through belief, humbleness, and hard work.
Macklemore hopes that the power of his songs/lyrics inspire his fans to the amount that god does when god speaks to people.
