Be careful how you play your cards (My mama told me)
Be true to self and you’ll go far (That's what mama told me)
Try not to break too many hearts
Note the gambling-centric “play your cards”/“hearts” wordplay here
“Be true to self…” is a paraphrase from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet,” in which a minor character counsels his son “To thy own self be true.” Apparently, it’s not clear whether this was Shakespeare’s own philosophy on life, or if he was just making fun of a character who is a back-stabbing douchebag.
