Lives a battle between pride and shame
The “church-goer” maintains a composed exterior as he hides his troubles with alcoholism. Addiction and dependency are a constant struggle and battle against oneself. He lives a constant battle on the inside; alcoholics find fighting the urge to drink extremely difficult, hence his “fragile frame” in the previous line suggests how shallow of a disguise it actually is.
Furthermore, “Battle between pride and shame” implies that he is too proud to seek help with his situation as he would draw negative attention to himself and can’t bare the humiliation.
