And feelin' weird about Naipaul
Heems is unsure about the post-colonial views of Trinidadian-British author V.S. Naipaul. The reason that Naipaul is a cause for discomfort is not just because of problematic books like “Beyond Belief”, but also as, what Edward Said called a “neo-colonial apologist” view. Especially since his Nobel Prize victory, he has started espousing increasingly right-wing views, including most infamously praising right-wing Hindu nationalism (“Hindutva”) a bulwark against “Muslim aggression” in India, and most recently stating that there was no woman author who was his equal.
