Reference to the opening lines of Ice Cube’s classic song “A Bird in the Hand” (released in 1991) and establishes the setting of Kendrick as a teenager.
This is further complemented by Kendrick switching the pitch of his voice up, to sound like when one’s voice breaks when they reach puberty. This was described by Pitchfork as a “pleading, near-hysterical sob.”
In most middle class places in America, people wouldn’t even talk about being graduates of high school because everyone finishes high school. When Kendrick was growing up though, the fact that he finished school made him different to most of his friends.
