And the heroin
Em’s using “heroin” as a symbol of the lack of understanding of the effects of drugs shared by the media and much of Middle America. Heroin, as even common sense should dictate to you, is not a favoured drug among most young people. Highly dangerous though it is, it is also unlikely to trigger the kind of impulses that lead to an act of violence (it’s more likely to make you sit and stare at the end of your shoe for eight hours). Therefore, to blame such an event as Columbine on teenage heroin use is both pitifully out of touch and medically unsubstantiated.
Em could be subliminally pointing out the hypocrisy of such bastions of taste and morality in condemning something they may not know enough about.
