Think, wheeze cough, scoffing and he's off again
This line is from Earl’s mom’s perspective. His mom is always suspecting he’s intoxicated. She thinks he’s high when he pauses to think or laughs, and that the fumes are causing him to wheeze and cough.
He could be referring to the tense dynamic between hean his mom. From her perspective, “Think, wheeze cough, scoffing and he’s off again.” His mom doesn’t know what to do. She offers peace offerings, but then her son is off into the night.
Earl thinks about his mom’s peace offering. Then he coughs that is probably wheezy from all the weed that he smokes. Then scoffs at his mom and blows her off to leave again. The line also provides the meaning that his mom could wheeze and cough from crying because she knows Earl’s fucking up.
Earl coughed on the proverbial peace pipe. He left because it didn’t go down well.
In terms of flow, notice the use of consonance in the last two lines here. Constant use of that ‘O’ sound: momma, often, offering, cough, scoffing, off.
“Scoff” is a socal term for a half-weed/half-tobacco.
Also, ‘to scoff’ means to eat a lot, something a weed smoker would do. His mother only sees him in the house when he’s “scoffing” food, and then “he’s off again”
