Woman hold her head and cry
Cause her son had been shot down in the street and died
Woman hold her head and cry
Cause her son had been shot down in the street and died

from The Notorious B.I.G. (Ft. Bob Marley) – Hold Ya Head Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

This is a sample of the song “Johnny Was a Good Man”, a song about a man being gunned down in the street. The only difference is that it is now referring to B.I.G. being gunned down in the street, and probably to Biggie’s mom. She cried when she heard the news, as were many other people (unlike what Biggie would expect in this song).

Expanding on his mom, Biggie loved his mother so much. He would call her and not hang up until she would say “love you too”, and she was in his first big music video. At the same time, he knew he disappointed her, rapping about crack, the mock up of a gangsta/killer, cheating on his lovely wife, and so on. He know she didn’t like his rap career from the beginning.

He would have never expected her to fight so hard to see justice be brought to his death, going as far as fighting the government and being featured in video documents.
