I want to be as free as the spirits of those who left
I'm talking Malcolm, Coltrane, my man Yusef
When one dies, one’s spirit is set free from the body, and it carries on in the people they’ve influenced. The free spirits of human rights activist Malcolm X, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, and Common’s childhood friend Yusef (a childhood friend, to whom he dedicated a track on one of his older albums, One Day It’ll All Make Sense, called “Reminding Me (of Sef)”) have all personally inspired him to achieve.
Sef was one of those dudes Malcolm X was talking about when he marveled about how the hustlers he knew might have been doctors or lawyers or even president if given the right opportunities. Come to think of it, I think Sef could have been a psychologist. He could look at you and see all the way through, no matter what front you tried to put up.
