“Little Black Sambo” was a children’s book from the late 1800s; it was also a brand in the U.S., as recently as the early 1980s as a restaurant chain. They tried to rename it “No Place Like Sam’s” after it was called racist. It didn’t work.

‘Sambo’ is now used as a racial slur equivalent to a pickaninny which is essentially a shiftless, lazy black child
