I thought you’d gone, but you were with me all along
Macklemore thought his addiction to codeine had gone after he had been clean for 3 years, but it was with him the entire time, and he realizes that after he relapsed.
Macklemore thought he was alone in fighting his addiction, but his family and friends (such as Ryan Lewis) were always there for him. His parents and especially his girlfriend stood by him the entire time through this relapse. He assumed, because of his relapse, these people, of all people, would have given up on him.
Reminiscent of this 1936 poem by Mary Stephenson:
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there were one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, “You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?” The Lord replied, “The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, is when I carried you.”
Another interpretation is that this was his line about God. It seems that he thought he was lost and God had left him when he when down the road of addiction, but he realized that God never left him, He just wasn’t as prevalent in his life during the time of his addiction.
A user comments: “The main reason I thought this was the line, “I never thought I would, Didn’t pick up the book” I figured this was talking about the Bible. He thought he could do it on his own without any help, but obviously that didn’t work for him and he was going to change his ways.”
