Rendered unconscious, they rushed me to a concert
Instead of green jello and maybe chicken soup
They fed me magazine covers and video shoots
“Went unconscious” has a double meaning. In addition to referring to being physically knocked unconscious by an accident, it is also a play on Lupe’s label as a “conscious” rapper. The accident makes him “go unconscious,” i.e. become the fake, materialistic rapper everybody in the verse (i.e. the doctor and therapist, who represent Atlantic, and all others who pressure him to be mainstream). Not surprisingly, those same people eagerly rush him to a concert, and feed him magazine covers and video shoots instead of green jello and soup.
This fits in with the next verse, in which Lupe is “Evil as Knievel,” undoubtedly still under the spell of his controllers, until he is woken back to “consciousness” by seeing a younger version of himself in the mirror.
