I would also add in addition to the literal sense of the Stop the Violence promotion, this line fits in the figurative sense by saying that people would rather see playoffs (or go about other aspects of daily life) then face the impending environmental disaster. They’ve stopped fighting for the environment (They done gave back they guns).
