Colin Powell who was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After serving in the Vietnam War Powell fought his way up the ranks, rising beyond the army structure. When he became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he implemented what has become known as the ‘Powell Doctrine’ a technique that preserves forces before striking with full military capacity.

The book Dorner loves is Powell’s autobiography, which detailed Powell’s rise through the ranks, his experiences of racism and his heroes and training.
