Deadly when I play a dope melody
from Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby Lyrics on Rap Genius
word play juxtaposing the literal use of “Killing” in the previous line with the metaphorical use of “killing the track/song” which, in hip hop/rap circles, means the melody/song is so good that nobody else will be able to use it ever again. No one has used this particular sample loop, and gained any major success since Ice did it in late 80’s -early 90’s. It is debatable if it’s due to the substantial royalty Ice ended up paying to the artist who owned the original copyright, the “fake/sellout” stigma that Vanilla Ice carries in hip hop circles, or if the track was truly as epic as he boasts in this line.
