from Leonardo da Vinci – Mona Lisa on Rap Genius

Meaning

This painting was originally painted on a 30" by 20 ½" frame, and was painted on a poplar panel by a sfumato oil technique (da Vinci described this technique as “without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane”.)

The painting provides an elevated perspective of a woman (presumably Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo) sitting in a chair, with an imaginary background containing various paths and mountains. The concept for the seated position came from early depictions of the Madonna.

This painting implements a pyramid design to efficiently place the model in the middle of the painting
