Mack has some major problems to battle with, and he know that he won’t just overcome them in one take. It’s a long road, and everything works against him — thus “heavy current”.
He’s gonna drown his aforementioned sorrows in liquor, but they are so intense that he’s gonna have to drink a lot for them to vanish. He uses swimming in a river with heavy current as a metaphor for this, since liquor is a liquid, which he’s trying to “swim through”. This further indicates how much alcohol he’s planning on drinking
