The crack epidemic hit the U.S. hard starting in 1984 and was widely available in 28 states by ‘86. Cole, born in '85, didn’t know his father because he left when he was still very young, but he was pretty sure his father would be hooked on crack considering the wide usage at the time.
This also mirrors his close friendship with Kendrick Lamar, who has an album titled Section.80 which goes in depth on this concept.
