Miracles Lyrics

[Intro: Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope]
We got a theory
You see, Mike, we got a theory
About magic, and miracles
That's right, that's right

[Verse 1: Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope]
If magic is all we've ever known
Then it's easy to miss what really goes on

But I've seen miracles in every way
And I see miracles every day
Oceans spanning beyond my sight

And a million stars way above 'em at night
We don't have to be high to look in the sky
And know that's a miracle opened wide

Look at the mountains, trees, the seven seas
And everything chilling underwater, please!
Hot lava, snow, rain and fog
Long neck giraffes, pet cats and dogs
And I've seen eighty-five thousand people
All in one room, together as equal

Pure magic is the birth of my kids
I've seen shit that'll shock your eyelids

The sun and the moon, and even Mars
The Milky Way and fucking shooting stars
UFOs, a river flows

Plant a little seed and nature grows
Niagara Falls and the pyramids
Everything you believed in as kids
Fucking rainbows, after it rains
There's enough miracles here to blow your brains

I fed a fish to a pelican at Frisco Bay
It tried to eat my cell phone, he ran away

And music is magic, pure and clean
You can feel it and hear it but it can't be seen
[Chorus: Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope]
(Are you a believer in miracles?)
Music is all magic
You can't even hold it

(Do you notice and recognize miracles?)
It's just there in the air
(Are you a believer in miracles?)
Pure motherfuckin' magic. Right?
This shit'll blow your motherfuckin' mind
(Do you notice and recognize miracles?)

[Verse 2: Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope]
Music is a lot like love, it's all a feeling
And it fills the room from the floor to the ceiling
I see miracles all around me
Stop and look around, it's all astounding

Water, fire, air and dirt
Fucking magnets, how do they work?
And I don't wanna talk to a scientist
Y'all motherfuckers lying, and getting me pissed

Solar eclipse, and vicious weather
Fifteen thousand Juggalos together
And I love my mom, for giving me this
Time on this planet, taking nothing for granted
I seen a caterpillar turn into a butterfly
Miracles ain't nothing to lie
Shaggy's little boys look just like Shaggy
And my little boy looks just like daddy
Miracles each and everywhere you look
And nobody has to stay where they put
This world is yours, for you to explore

It's nothing but miracles beyond your door
The Dark Carnival is your invitation
To witness that without explanation

Take a look at this fine creation
And enjoy it better with appreciation
Crows, ghosts, the midnight coast
The wonders of the world, mysteries the most
Just open your mind, and it ain't no way
To ignore the miracles of every day
And that's real
[Chorus: Violent J & Shaggy 2 Dope]
(Are you a believer in miracles?)
Magic everywhere in this bitch
(Do you notice and recognize miracles?)
It's all around you, you don't even know it
(Are you a believer in miracles?) Shit's crazy
(Do you notice and recognize miracles?)
(So many miracles, the magic miracles)

[Outro]
Are you a believer in miracles?
Do you have time for the miracles?
Do you notice and recognize miracles?
So many miracles, the magic miracles

[Skit]
Well, we're here! We came all the way to Ash, Nevada!
Come on!
Where's the show and where's our money?
I came all the way from England! Where's me bloody 'undred thousand pounds?
What I wanna know is where in hell is my goddamn hundred thousand dollars?
And where can I get some beer in this motherfucker?
I thought this was a carnival. Where's all the sexy kids at? Don't tell me I brought all this candy for nothing!
I didn't come all this way to stand around here with all these goddamn tadpoles! Let's get a move on!
Start this shit so we can get paid!
We came a long way to see this shit! It'd better be worth it, or Imma kill somebody! Mother fucker!

Genius Annotation

The song, that was meant to inspire us to appreciate the beauties and subtle mysteries of the natural world, became more famous for a certain insipid line in the middle.

It was even parodied on SNL!

Genius Answer

In Violent J’s personal review of the album on ICP’s website, he said:

This is another one of my favorites. I Read a review in the Detroit News and the writer didn’t like this song, and said “hearing this song makes you wish ICP would stick to serial killing”. I love this side of ICP and I think it’s important to who we are. It shows our depth, I believe. We’ve been doing songs like this from time to time since way back with “Joke Ya Mind”. Every once and a while we throw a meaningful song in our mix. Once again it’s a softer tune, because were talking to Juggalos on this one. It’s like a direct conversation. The song is about the miracles that we see in everyday life, but because they’ve always been around, we probably don’t notice them anymore. If you’ve ever stood on the beach of an ocean in the middle of the night and looked up and the trillions of stars that’s enough to tell you there’s some fuckin’ miracles going on here. This song points out some of every day’s biggest and best miracles and suggests that you take the time to peep some of them out and re-evaluate what your seeing here. Because the truth is right here on this earth, in every day life there is some pretty fuckin’ fantastic shit poppin’ off. Mike’s music paints the whole backdrop of what were trying to say with this song perfectly. And his guitar solo at the end ties it all together. Shaggy’s fresh ass beat box hidden off in the music at the end is devastating as well. I wasn’t so sure of this song when we first did it but now I’m very proud of it and I can truthfully say that I love it. We understand if your not feeling it though. We know it’s way different and all that. But if you can open your mind enough to see a miracle out of a lightning bug, than maybe you can open your mind enough to dig this song.

In a 2011 interview with A.V. Club, Violent J said:

Miracles. Things on this Earth that are beautiful that are overlooked all the time. Especially nowadays. Everybody lives on the fucking Internet. Things that we see every day that we take for granted. I got kids, all right? I got a 4-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son. They love lightning bugs, brother. You know why? Because they’re seeing them for the first time. A bug. Listen to me, a bug. That can light up, like a light bulb. They look out the window at night in our front yard, and they see lightning bugs. And that’s the shit to them. And you know what, it’s the shit to me too.

And that’s what it is, miracles. Just because we’ve seen them our whole lives doesn’t make them any less amazing. When the sky is all red at night when the sun’s going down. My son asked me yesterday, “Why does the sky look like that? Why is everything golden like that?” I don’t know why. I’m sure scientists can explain it, but it’s still awesome to look up and see the sky look like that. Same thing with a fucking rainbow after a big thunderstorm. Sometimes there’s two rainbows. It’s just awesome. Little things that we see in this world that we see so much, we probably don’t appreciate anymore, but they’re awesome.

They’re miracles. They’re little gifts of freshness on this earth. And I’m not saying they’re from God, even if they’re all nature, and it all can be explained by science, they’re every bit still as cool as they were. A giraffe. A fucking giraffe, all right? Maybe if you live in the desert in Africa, a giraffe ain’t shit to you. But for some motherfuckers from Detroit, a giraffe is some shit, man. It is awesome, living on the second story of your house, and have a giraffe stick its head in your bedroom. Tell me you won’t freak the fuck out. And the same thing with elephants, man. An animal that big that can step and crush your car? That’s like a dinosaur! That’s amazing! Just ’cause they’re on TV every day doesn’t make it any less incredible. They’re fucking huge. Imagine shoveling elephant shit. It’s just saying that these are gifts that we are given to help us relax, to get to the ocean at night. Standing at the foot of the ocean at night at Myrtle Beach, looking out to the darkness, is terrifying and it’s beautiful and it’s awesome. These are gifts we’ve been given. And somehow we make a song about it, and everybody laughs at us? I’d rather be the dorky guy appreciating that shit than the idiot missing it all, I’ll tell you that.

Also, during a 2012 interview with LA Weekly, Insane Clown Posse discussed writing “Miracles”:

Violent J: I write the first initial skeleton of it, and then [Shaggy 2 Dope] takes it and adjusts it to his liking. […] We started the new album. That was one of the first songs we did. When I heard the beat I thought of the concept, which is about … You know, I had kids recently — not recently but four, five years ago, and I’m showing them everything through their eyes, for the first time. Everything, brother. Even magnets. My kids find that shit fascinating. Everything is fascinating through the eyes of a kid. But we grow out of that shit. I’m not just babbling — this is what the song is about! We grow to not appreciate shit anymore. Like a forest, or anything like that. A shooting star, a fucking comet flying by. Things like that, they’re nothing like us anymore. […] I was mesmerized for years about that shit, you know? And nowadays you talk about that, you bring that up, and people laugh at you. That’s what the song is about. These are miracles, and we’re not religious like that. … I mean, I’m religious […] We don’t go to church, I don’t have a pastor or nothing like that, but I like to think I believe in God. But that’s not what the song is about. […] The album was doing very good for us, so we decided to do a video for that song. We said, “Let’s do a video about one of our more touching ones.” Which, honestly, even making that song, it isn’t nothing new to the ICP world. We got lots of songs like that. I can name them all if you’d like. “Joke Ya Mind.” “Pass Me By,” “Nothing’s Left,” “Crossing [Thy] Bridge” … They’re deep, they’re slow, they’re meaningful. They’re not about ax murder. They’re deep songs where we’re trying to talk about deep things. […] So that’s what that song is about: It’s just everyday men asking questions like that. I’m sure a preacher can tell you the answer according to that Bible or whatever, but it’s just us asking questions in the form of song. When it came out the joke was … the song, everything. “Are they serious? Did they think those are miracles? Are they fucking serious about that?” Once again, ICP is looked at like … goofs, you know. And that’s all right by us. Shit, that’s super all right by us.
Shaggy 2 Dope: It’s so funny. I said this to a couple of different people. To me is funny because if, say, Bob Dylan would have came up with that song, people probably would have been, “Oh, shit, man! That’s the bomb!” You know what I’m sayin'. But because we came up with it, they’re, like, “What assholes.”
Violent J: That song was for Juggalos. We didn’t think anything would happen with that outside of the Juggalo world. We made it to school Juggalos — we thought they would be, “That’s awesome.” They love it, because it’s part of our style. You can pull any of our albums out, you’re gonna find a song with that type of flavor. That’s nothing new to us. We always get deep. That’s why Juggalos love us. It’s not just the ax murder, there’s more to our dish than that. Honestly, we’ve come from the heart, our whole career. Juggalos know that, but most people just know us as […] wild-style acts, you know, throwing shit. No, that was a song for Juggalos. Nothing adventurous, no new ground for us. We never thought it’d go viral like that. I’m glad it did — best thing that ever happened to us, probably […] The last thing we wanna come off like, and I really mean this, is that we’re bitching and complaining about our career. I love where we are. I love that we are “The Most Hated Band in the World.” I love how misunderstood we are — that’s what makes us so special to our fans.

In an interview on ICP’s website, Violent J responded to the song’s popularity:

I don’t know what Webster’s definition of the word “miracle” is, but we’ve always thought it meant something fuckin’ amazing and incredible. A fuckin’ special, awesome event of some kind. A great, wonderful thing. A fuckin’ miracle.

The song “Miracles” is classic ICP. Our listeners know we’ve always included one or two deep, meaningful songs on our albums, we’ve just never made a video for one until now. It was a good idea, obviously, ‘cause it’s got people talkin’. The truth is it don’t make us mad to see all the hate “Miracles” gets from the mainstream. We’ve been “The Most Hated Band in The World” for many years. Without all the hate on the outside, it wouldn’t be as warm as it is on the inside with the Juggalo Fam. Instead, all the hate “Miracles” generates makes us sad. Sad for the haters.

I mean, yeah, we get it. It’s funny to people on the outside lookin’ in, seeing two clowns rapping about space and shit, while floatin’ around in an orgy of screen savers. And SNL’s parody was off the hook hilarious. But when you step back and really look at all the genuine hate it got from everyday people, it’s hard to believe that so few got it.

Yes, most of the miracles we mention can easily be explained away by science, that’s why we say the line “fuck scientists.” Their factual findings sometimes explain away the Earth’s cool mysteries. Part of me wishes they were lying. Part of me doesn’t want to know how they really make crop circles. My imagination wants to believe it’s aliens or somethin’. If people can’t relate to that, then that’s their loss. I mean, seriously, it must truly suck to have no imagination about these things. We Juggalos have deep imaginations, and an awesome sense of humor.

As for the infamous line, “fuckin’ magnets… how do they work?” Magnets were like magic to me as a kid. You could move things across the table without actually touching them! I found that shit amazing and I still do. If you don’t like that, have a dick for dinner. As for the sun and the stars. Who looks up into the sky and doesn’t wonder sometimes? Come on, man, I fuckin’ straight up feel sorry for anybody that can look at the moon the trees, and the seven seas, and not see fuckin’ miracles. It’s not about religion either. Nature itself is a miracle. Stand toe to toe with the ocean at night and tell me that shit ain’t amazing.

We appreciate all this shit. Especially a yellow ass, long neck giraffe. What’s a shame is how people walk around blind to it all. They lost their spirit about everything. If you can’t even see the miracle in animals, then you must have never truly loved a pet. That has to suck for you. Maybe you mother fuckers should relax that wound up, extra tense bitch ass of yours for a minute and go smoke a joint or somethin’. Be an individual, step out and away from the flow of the crowd. Take a time out, open up ya mind and then peep the giraffe. Try to appreciate some of these miracles, bitch.

What’s a miracle is the fact that some people haven’t recognized by now that Insane Clown Posse will never die. ICP will go down in history as an independent music miracle. Get used to these ugly faces. MMFCLJ.
