The song deals with lovesickness. Mr. Hudson and Mr. West sing about women they lost; a scenario that was not fictional as both were experiencing the failure of a relationship at the time. Hudson broke up with his long term girlfriend during the making of his debut album. Kanye, before, had broken up with his fiancée Alexis Phifer.

When Kanye made 808s & Heartbreak in 2008, his at that point latest album, he already worked out the downs in his personal life in his music.
