But wouldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight

from Jay Z – 99 Problems Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

Jay-Z’s way of calling the guy a sissy; in a fruity feud, he wouldn’t even bruise anybody

Jay-Z bit this line from LL Cool J’s “To Da Break of Dawn”:

Shooting the gift, but you just don’t shoot it right
You couldn’t bust a grape in a fruit fight

Now, on the one hand, I see that there is a lot of “homage” to Old School rap in this verse. On the other hand, is this more appropriately categorized as “fair use” or “biting”?

What did Jay say in ‘what more can I say’?: “Im not a biter I’m a writer for myself and others, I say a big verse I’m only bigging up my brothers”. He never bites, he pays respect.

A similar line of “Bust a grape in a food fight” is used in The Beatnuts' “No Escapin' This (Alternate Vocal Version)”
