Oww, hoes turn they heads like owls, I'm the man of the hour
Triple entendre, don't even ask me how

from Drake (Ft. Jay Z) – Light Up Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

Before all you Illumnati fans get hyped up let’s just clear the air to say these are arguably some of the deepest bars in all of rap in terms of hidden meanings.

A triple entendre is a phrase that can be interpreted 3 different ways (see our post on the subject). Jay has made many brilliant triple entendres in his career

But here, although Jay pronounces “Oww”, “Owl” and “Hour” as homophones, so that they sound almost the same, each statement has but one meaning: when Jay makes ridiculous catcalls at women, they check him out because he’s a big-shot.

Conversely, a creative interpretation reveals that there may very well be a triple entendre present in this line:

  1. Literal meaning. Women turn their heads to look at Jay-Z because he’s such a big shot.
  2. Jay-Z is a featured artist on this song, but hoes turn their heads when he starts to spit because it’s his time to perform and they’re excited/in awe of him. “Man of the hour = Rapper who is presently rapping”.
  3. Hoes turn their heads like the owls do. Drake’s crew is OVO, whose symbol is an owl. He’s saying that even the owls turn their heads when it’s his turn to rap. They probably all turned their heads when Jay-Z stepped into the studio to spit this verse.
