Stimulant and sedative, original repetitive
Violently competitive, a school unaccredited
“Stimulant and sedative” — people listen to hip hop and dance, others listen to it as they sit around thinking.
“original repetitive” — Hip hop is original, also “copied” in the sense that it is usually based off of beats and samples originally written and performed by other artists — hip-hop depends on what Larry Lessig calls “remix culture”
“violently competitive” — The violence in rap competition isn’t just metaphorical, as the deaths of Tupac and Biggie testify to
“a school unaccredited” — Hip-hop is a “school” of art (just as there have been “schools” of philosophy and painting throughout western civilization), but it is not a “school” that is recognized by the wider (white) society as an art form — most in the power structure see hip-hop as club music for kids, ignoring the subtle wit and intelligence that characterizes rap music at its best.
