It seems Nelly is acknowledging what Spelman University students said when they protested him back in the day — that he was using his music to glorify much that is negative in life (of course they were most concerned about the misogyny in the “Tip Drill” video). He hates that he did that. He’s lamented it, which again speaks to the power of music and his feelings for it. He’s also heard rappers predict their deaths through music. Pac’s verses on Richie Rich’s “Niggas Done Changed” comes to mind, and Biggie made a whole album of forecasting his demise. Beyond rap, Hendrix’s “Ballad of Jimi” and John Lennon’s “Borrowed Time” also come to mind.
