I am a god
Even though I'm a man of God
My whole life in the hands of God
So y'all better quit playing with God
But Kanye takes it further, boldly claiming that his life and his work is divinely inspired and being molded by God himself (a nod to the Yeezus album title).
Essentially, if you mess with Yeezus, you mess with God.
By proclaiming himself as both a god and a man, Kanye is playing with the sacred dichotomy between God and man. The first two lines set up his profane manipulation: in his first line, he declares himself a “God”, however, he divulges himself as a “man” in the follow up line. These two lines both treat the Judeo-Christian dichotomy of God and man with irreverence and set up his even more contemptuous wordplay in the following two lines. In the third and fourth lines he declares boldly that his life is in his own hands and lashes out at his critics.
Kanye’s professed Christianity is problematic, because even though he raps about God on numerous tracks (notably “Jesus Walks”), he also raps about drugs, threesomes, and general debauchery. Like numerous other musicians before him, Johnny Cash coming instantly to mind, Ye is torn between a Christian upbringing and a life of temptation. He knows Jesus will accept him and possibly take advantage of this fact. More simply put, he wants to follow God, but you know what Oscar Wilde said about temptation: the easiest way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it. That is, the devil’s trynna break him down.
Or conversely, Kanye is simply echoing scripture. In Psalm 82:5-7 : They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. I have said, You are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But you shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
Then, Jesus himself gives credence to this notion in John 10:34; Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are "gods”’?. It is important to note the difference between god & God, which Kanye’s team made clear during the initial announcement and speculation surrounding this album, that the song’s title is in fact I am a god not I am God, the key being the a article placed before god in Ye’s song title. Yeezus is only claiming what has already been declared by God, maybe more of us should take that cue…
