So I'mma need a little more time now
Cause I ain't got the money on me right now
And I thought you could wait
Yeah, I thought you could wait
These lines, taken independently from the rest of the song, can be interpreted in two ways:
- Kanye is singing about a girl that he was in love with before the fame. He told her to wait on him until he became more successful so that they could become more serious, but she was impatient/he forgot about her. This theme is explored in Homecoming which is itself an extended metaphor for his hometown Chicago, likened to a forgotten lover.
- Kanye is rapping about his late mother. He remembers how he used to prioritize his career over everything else and used to say this to his mother. He was happy to do this, because he thought he would have more time to spend with her, not knowing that she would be taken from him before her time and he would end up missing her.
I'mma need a little more time now
Cause I ain’t got the money on me right now
Donda West was always an avid supporter of his career, as he tells us in his open letter dedicated to her, and so this would just sting even more.
