The oil spill that BP ain't clean up

from Jay Z (Ft. Frank Ocean) – Oceans Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

In 2010, there was the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is considered the largest accidental oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The oil company, British Petroleum (BP) were the ones running the oil rig.

He’s referring to the slaves that died on trips to America, and the oil he speaks of being spilled is the African blood. The company BP can clean the actual oil spill but no one could right the situation of the slaves that lost their lives.

Jay Z may also be viewed as the oil that refused to be refined (cleaned). He spilled, meaning his mind wasn’t “piped” by the masters of slavery and so “BP” couldn’t clean him up, BP in this case would refer to corporations that enforce their ways of thinking into society.

Also BP is used to refer to the Blueprint. The success he received from the album (And his career in general) didn’t clean up the oil spill, meaning that even Hova’s success didn’t rid him of the disadvantages that come with being a black man in America.
