Go ahead and watch the sun blaze on the waves of the ocean
Go ahead and watch the son blaze on the waves of the ocean" — Watch Jay-Z & Frank, “the son” or descendant of a slave blaze up (smoke weed) in a celebratory manner on a boat riding the waves of the ocean. They’ve been through so much that they can sit back and relax now.
The other meaning is Go ahead and watch the sun blaze on the waves of the ocean — Referring to the blazing hot sun (reminiscent of the hot sun slaves worked tirelessly in) hitting the oceans waves, the same waves that carried slave ships to America.
Another meaning of the line could be illustrating “The waves of the Ocean” as in the soundwaves created by Frank Ocean.
Frank is creating some pretty effective imagery here so I guess it’s only fitting for him to say “Go ahead and watch”. This also creates a distance between the listener and the lyric, like we’re watching it because we don’t know what it’s like to experience it first hand. Both the celebration on the boat AND being on a slave ship. This is an incredibly dope line as it contrasts a braggadocios meaning with a melancholy one, a celebratory meaning with one of mourning.
Again continuing this theme of ‘duality’ Jay-Z speaks on in this video.
