And hitting stains on birthday candles
“Hitting stains” is Chicago slang for stealing or robbing. Birthday candles is a reference to the young years of children’s lives. Chano is basically saying that the city is taking away the lives of young children.
This is also a play on the first and third line of the bridge. He’s glad to have lived another year, he got here by cheating death, and as a result he’s stolen another year. Thus, he can metaphorically add another birthday candle to his cake.
This also goes with the last line “Shooting death with weighted dice” Because everyone will eventually die since to “shoot” means to roll. Birthday candles represent another year of life. Since you will “shoot death” with dice your life, (i.e. birthday candles), will be taken away. Death is hitting the stains.
