"Hey, it's me, Versace! Whoops, somebody shot me!
And I was just checking the mail, get it? Checking the 'male'?"
Gianni Versace was a famous gay fashion designer who was the founder and namesake of the famous Versace company. He was shot and killed in 1997 in front of his house (and since mailboxes are in the front of a house, Em assumes he was checking the mail)
“Checking the mail” also has a double meaning (which he completely explains) because Versace was gay. Hence the next line “Get It? Checking the ‘male’?”
One of Em’s flaws (or perhaps a strength?) is his extreme irreverence. He plays with pop culture for no other reason than he feels like it, and for shock value, be it Christopher Reeves' paralysis, Michael Jacksons child molestation accusations, or, in this case, the murder of Versace.
Does he mean offence? Probably? Is he being malevolent? In the context of a song about his own controversial lyrics — no. He’s continually baiting us. And, amazingly, getting away with it due to his craziness.
Note: his delivery is wild and wacky here, sounding like a hyped up cartoon character. This is pure id at work.
