Unlike Hamlet or anything your high school English teacher stretched to interpret as Oedipal, Kanye makes his interest in his mother abundantly clear.
His lack of subtly in trying to elevate his music from pop to high art often irks his critics. For example, his Runaway “movie” contained myriad references to visual artists largely unfamiliar to his audience. In his defense, even when his is blatantly unsubtle (as in the Oedipal themes of this song) his references are often missed or as he often complains “misunderstood.”
