Em felt like he wasn’t as big in the industry anymore (He was still a large influence… He was just on hiatus.) and he also had a hard time hearing people say “Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive!” And what not.
Eminem, being the drug addict he WAS often rapped about popping pills and the like while relapsing — even on this song (see last verse). Here Em is referencing his past addiction by saying that hearing such bad news was a “bitter pill to swallow”. This term is often used to express something that is hard for one to except. This idea (pill) was hard to except (swallow) even though he would be considered a pill swallowing connoisseur at this point…
