“Paki” is racial slur popularized by White British skinheads in the 1960s and 1970s, and used, ignorantly, against all South Asians in England (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi). In the 1980s and 90s, the term was re-appropriated by South Asian activists (similar to appropriation of “queer” and “dyke” by the gay rights movement), leading to movements like “Paki Power”, etc. These days the term has become as ubiquitous as a symbol of assertive Asian in-your-face politics as the re-appropriation of “Nigga”.
