But I gotta keep a few punchlines, just in case cause even you unsigned
Rappers are hungry looking at me like it's lunchtime
There was a lot of thought that Eminem had fallen off, after his Relapse and Recovery albums. Eminem’s got to keep a few punch lines in there to keep the haters silent. Often many young new artists will spit dis’s at the big named artists in attempts to gain more attention — remember “How to Rob”?
He also needs the occasional punchline to maintain some humor, sometimes in a macabre manner (the shock value which has made him so popular), or sometimes lightheartedly to refrain from constantly focusing on dark subject matter.
Em used a lot of really similar rhymes in the song “8 Mile”:
But yet I’m still unsigned, havin a rough time
Sit on the porch with all my friends and kick dumb rhymes
Go to work and serve MCs in the lunchline
But when it comes crunch time, where do my punchlines go
