Let's pretend Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen
Picking up a pen is in this case metaphorical for starting to rap (starting to write rap lyrics).
But what really would have happened if Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen?
- first off, as a troubled youth living in a rough area of Detroit it’s tough to see a happy ending for young Marshall
- the “color barrier” in hip-hop might not have been broken yet, so acts like Mac Miller, Chris Webby, Yelawolf, and MGK could have trouble reaching any degree of success
- every college stadium in America would have to find a new pump up song if “Lose Yourself” was never written
- and countless mom’s across the nation would have never been horrified the first time they ever heard “Kim”
