I'm outside chalking up drawings on the sidewalk and in the front drive
Talking to myself, either that or inside hiding off in
The corner somewhere quiet, trying not to be noticed
Cause I'm crying and sobbin'

from Eminem – Legacy Lyrics on Rap Genius

Meaning

Eminem became withdrawn as a result of his bullying. After being hurt so badly by his peers, he found safety by finding ways to enjoy life on his own and spending time with his own thoughts. “Hiding off in” is also a play on “often” and “off in”. He would need to let out his emotions through crying and to do so, he would try to hide and find comfort in the silence.

“Chalking up” can mean two things depending on where you fit the line:

  1. (“I’m outside chalking up drawings on the sidewalk.”)
He’s literally making drawings with chalk

  2. (“Thinking he can try and solve ‘em, I’m outside chalking up”)
He’s beyond the diagnosis of psychologists, meaning that his problems can’t be “chalked up” or properly analyzed.

“hiding off in” is a play on the homophones “often” and “off in”
