I was countin' on you to count me out
Ask Asher Roth when he round about dissed me to shout me out
On radio station Hot 97, host Peter Rosenberg played this line back to Asher Roth, who said it was “pretty amazing” to be dissed by Em.
Really, it’s just crazy that he even knows my name in the sense of being a 23-year-old kid on the come up, it’s great to have the pioneers before you really know who you are.
Eminem did not take kindly to Asher’s response finding it “surprising that he even knows my name.” Eminem took this as an insult saying that he was no longer relevant or up to date on the hip hop game.
When Asher first broke into the Hip-Hop/Rap scene he was constantly being compared to Eminem. Eventually it got to the point that Asher released As I Em on his freshman record, Asleep in the Bread Aisle. The song spoke of how Asher was sick of being viewed as someone attempting to piggyback on top of Eminem’s success because they were both white and have similar sounds.
It is unlikely that Em views Asher as a threat, and a frankly a bit shocking that he perceived Asher’s comment as an insult. Well-informed readers know that Asher is an extremely intelligent and humble artist who has the utmost respect for the Rap God.
Asher does use the past tense in As I Em as if he was counting Em out of the rap game.
Asher featured on Tim Westwood’s YouTube Channel where he rapped freestyles to Eminem beats probably with the intentions of being ironic. He may have inadvertently disrespected the Rap God by saying lines like
I’m like 15 years younger than him
Funny that one song earlier, he uses one of Asher’s puns.
