Keeping his head higher will increase how far away it is from hell, being that hell is under the earth according to catholic beliefs.
Dante Aligheri’s “The Divine Comedy” shows hell as a series of 9 levels, level 1 being the hottest, and level 9 being absolute zero. By Delusional Thomas keeping his head up, he remains in the hotter levels in hell, agreeing with the beginning of the line denying his place in heaven.
