Somehow the rap game reminds me of the crack game
This is one of the earliest formulations of the now-huge-meme that rapping is a lot like selling drugs: Jay-Z even sampled this line in his song “Rap Game Crack Game”, in which Jay fleshes out the metaphor
Nas may actually be talking about how the “rap game” or hiphop scene had become corrupted with the same elements of the “crack game” or drug selling scene. For example, there were individuals like Jimmy Henchmen or Suge Knight who were big criminal bosses that many rappers went through to acquire fame and who also employed intimidation through armed gangs. Napoleon from the Tupac’s Outlawz, who witnessed the violence that entered the rap scene first-hand, in a documentary once described the rap scene as nothing more than the drug/gang scene but with a lot more money involved.
