Genius Annotation

Bitches & Sisters is one of the bonus tracks from Jay-Z’s seventh studio album The Blueprint²: The Gift & The Curse. Frequent Hov collaborator Just Blaze produced the track, sampling Kim Weston’s 1970 version of the classic Soul ballad ‘When Something is Wrong With My Baby’ and the controversial N.W.A track ‘A Bitch Iz a Bitch’. Hov’s verses deal with similar themes of the West Coast group’s track, seemingly agreeing with Ice Cube’s opinion: not all women are bitches, but sometimes a bitch iz just a bitch.

This is gonna be a shocker, but listen to the whole song…”

Released six years into Jay’s Roc-A-Fella Records career, this is one of the last tracks in his discography that is explicitly misogynistic. Yet it can be seen as a tempering of his tendencies when compared to a song such as Big Pimpin'.

In a 2010 interview Jay condemned his past treatment of women in his lyrics, but here we see a slight attempt to placate at least some of the female population with the distinction between “Bitches” and “Sisters”, implying that his more vicious lyrics are reserved for the former.

What is a "sister" and what is a "bitch"?
Genius Answer

As told by Jay, a sister is someone who enriches your life and makes things easier on you. Whether this is through sex, handling their business, or giving advice. The exact opposite of this is a bitch, a girl who will “hold you up” and bring more drama into your life.
