In the autumn of 2001, following the 9/11 attacks, a then-unknown terrorist sent deadly anthrax spores through the mail at random, killing five people and seizing the nation with fear. The notes contained in the letters claimed that the attacks were being carried out by Al Qaeda (of which Osama bin Laden is the leader). However, the real culprit, an American scientist named Bruce Ivins, was discovered in 2008 (he promptly committed suicide before being arrested).
